Hardly anyone doubts the great importance of non-verbal communication in personal, family or friendship relationships. But does this wordless communication also influences the working environment in a company? In what sense? The answers, in today's article.

What is non-verbal communication?

Non-verbal communication is defined as a communicative process in which the message is conveyed between the interlocutors without words, but with gestures, postures, looks, silences, pauses... That is to say: in any communicative process, two codes are interspersed, linguistic and non-linguistic, verbal and non-verbal.

Verbal language or linguistic code is made up of words while the non-verbal language or non-linguistic code is made up of facial and body expressions, the tone, volume and timbre with which we utter words, the pauses and silences we insert between words and sentences, etc.

Importance of internal non-verbal communication

Making decisions taking into account the great importance of non-verbal communication in your company is fundamental from two points of view: internal and external. We are talking about internal and external communication or, in other words, the fluid communication that takes place within the company and the different external communication strategies that an organisation carries out with its customers, suppliers, shareholders or professional contacts.

We are going to focus on the importance of non-verbal communication within our organisation, in working meetings and in direct conversation between managers and employees.

Regardless of its size or sector of activity, the most important value of a company is its human team. If CEOs or managers fail to maintain a fluid and respectful personal relationship with their employees, the working environment will cool down and employee productivity will drop. Most of the time, such a smooth and respectful personal relationship is achieved by having a conversation and, mind you, “not talking”. What exactly do we mean? We mean that in any conversation between equals or non-equals, there is verbal communication - a few words - and non-verbal communication - gestures, looks, pauses, silences... -. Which is more important? What is said or what is not said but conveyed?
