What exactly is the achievement motivation?

As I was telling you a few lines ago, the science of psychology perfectly defines achievement motivation: an inner force that pushes each person to make the most of their innate potential, to train and develop it in such a way that they can achieve a series of specific professional accomplishments, such as moving up the career ladder, leading a particular project, managing a branch, or becoming a go-to person within the company.

In principle, The need for achievement, or achievement motivation, is something we all have. Human beings from a young age. As we grow and develop personally and professionally, that motivation will increase or, unfortunately, will stall.  It can also happen that a middle-aged professional retains all their achievement motivation, but that I worked in a badly managed organisation that personal desire to keep improving their potential and, let's not forget, the work productivity that this passion for being the best professional entails.

Another important aspect that we must not forget and that significantly influences personal achievement motivation is the social and economic environment in which both the subject and the business organisations develop. A good example of this is the profound global economic crisis which we have been suffering from for several years. That crisis negatively affected both workers and companies who did not know that one can have happy employees without having to raise their salary.

Fortunately, little by little we are leaving behind the worst years of recession and can now return to working on those aspects that enhance the professional wellbeing of our valuable human team and, consequently, the economic and stability wellbeing of large, medium and small companies.

Achievement motivation, how can we encourage it?

Even though achievement motivation is intrinsic, if we lead human teams we need to know that we can influence this very personal motivation immensely. How can we foster this personal achievement motivation? In many complementary ways. For example, the following:

Improving the Internal communication company

The worker must be free to communicate to their colleagues and superiors their desires to improve and prosper within the company, their need to study a specialised course, their wish to learn languages, etc. If an employee encounters constant communication barriers when expressing their training or informational needs, their achievement motivation will suffer or stagnate.

Empowering the Continuous training

All professionals need to improve and update our knowledge and skills: workshops, seminars, conferences, online courses... This is a fact and, in addition, one of the best ways to awaken that achievement motivation that has fallen asleep because of the daily routine.

An exhausted worker will hardly have the time or the will to think about improving their work potential.
