Entrepreneurial motivation according to Steven Reiss' 16 Wishes

business motivation

In a previous post we talked about the Maslow's pyramid as a key to increasing entrepreneurial motivation. In a more detailed projection we find the 16 wishes of Steven Reiss, The list explains the stimuli that motivate human beings through this emotion: desire.

Let us look at each of these in detail, as well as their relationship to entrepreneurial motivation.

The 16 wishes of business motivation

#1 -Curiosity

Being curious is a quality of people who have a strong Intrinsic motivation to learn new things. The company must identify employees who possess this gift of curiosity and feed their desire for learning through training and development programmes.

#2 – Order

Within the company, we must identify and harness the motivation of those individuals who enjoy sorting, categorising, and organising files, folders, information, and other types of data.

#3 – Acceptance

Acceptance by others, in addition to desire, is also a human need, as Maslow indicated in his pyramid. To maintain business motivation in this regard, we must ensure that there is always a good work climate among all employees.

#4 – Honour

Honour refers to the loyalty a person has towards their own values. Companies also have values: transparency, social responsibility, excellence…

To ensure business motivation, during the personnel selection process, we must endeavour to choose candidates whose values align with those of our company.

#5 – Idealism

Also known as social justice. The problem is that each person has their own concept of justice. The company must investigate what each employee considers fair and, in the event of differences, hold a conversation to establish a mutual agreement.

#6 – Food

Let's remember that the basic step of the Maslow's hierarchy of needs it referred to food and other physiological needs. It is clear that business motivation cannot be maintained if employees do not earn enough to guarantee their food.

#7 – Savings

As well as earning enough, it's important for employees to have a monthly amount available for saving. In this regard, there are solutions such as the Flexible remuneration that contribute to achieving this.

#8 – Tranquillity

When it comes to business motivation, peace of mind comes from savings: an employee who can save an amount each month is a contented employee.

#9 – Independence

If an employee feels that they cannot survive without the company they work for, they will be creating a dependent relationship which will generate emotional tensions that can lead to inefficiency and poor performance.

Paradoxical though it may seem, the company must ensure that its employees are aware that they do not need it.

#10 – Physical activity

Companies that have spaces where their employees can practice sports have an advantage in increasing productivity and business motivation.

#11 – Social contact

As social animals, human beings are more motivated when we can interact with other people.

This is why coworking spaces or common workrooms can contribute to good performance, as long as we ensure they don't increase distraction.

EThe current coronavirus pandemic, while maintaining safety measures to avoid contagion, such as the mandatory use of masks indoors and keeping safe distances.

#12 – Family

The company must communicate to its employees that it will provide them with enough to care for their families. In that regard, food, savings, and family are directly related.

#13 – Romance

Romantic love should be avoided in the workplace, as personal relationships between colleagues can lead to emotional friction that is counterproductive for the company.

#14 – Power

Promotions are a clear example of power as a business motivator. If we offer our employees the chance to be promoted, they will feel more motivated.

#15 – Status

Status is directly related to power, so by contributing to the former, we will guarantee the latter.

#16 – Revenge

Finally, the desire for revenge, much like the desire for romance, is one of the entrepreneurial motivations that should be avoided at all costs in business, as it only brings detriment.
