Entrepreneurial motivation according to Steven Reiss' 16 Wishes

business motivation

Table of contents

In a previous post we talked about the Maslow's pyramid as a key to increasing entrepreneurial motivation. In a more detailed projection we find the 16 wishes of Steven Reiss, The list explains the stimuli that motivate human beings through this emotion: desire.

Let us look at each of these in detail, as well as their relationship to entrepreneurial motivation.

The 16 wishes of entrepreneurial motivation

#1 -Curiosity

Being curious is a quality of people who have a strong intrinsic motivation to learn new things. The company must identify employees who possess this gift of curiosity and nurture their appetite for learning through education and training programmes.

#2 - Order

In business, we must detect and harness the motivation of those people who enjoy sorting, categorising and organising files, folders, information and other data.

#3 - Acceptance

Acceptance by others is not only a desire, but also a human need, as Maslow indicated in his pyramid. In order to maintain entrepreneurial motivation in this respect, we must ensure that there is always a good work climate among all employees.

#4 - Honour

Honour refers to a person's loyalty to his or her own values. Companies also have values: transparency, social responsibility, excellence...

In order to ensure corporate motivation, during the recruitment process we should aim to select candidates whose values are in line with those of our company.

#5 - Idealism

Also known as social justice. The problem is that everyone has their own concept of fairness. The company should investigate what each employee considers fair and, in case of differences, have a conversation to establish a mutual agreement.

#6 - Food

Let us recall that the basic rung of the Maslow's pyramid was about food and other physiological needs. It is obvious that business motivation cannot be sustained if employees do not earn enough to be able to guarantee their food.

#7 - Saving

In addition to earning enough money, it is important for employees to have a monthly amount to save. In this respect, there are solutions such as the flexible compensation that contribute to achieving this.

#8 - Tranquility

In terms of business motivation, peace of mind derives from savings: an employee who can save an amount each month is a peace of mind employee.

#9 - Independence

If an employee feels that without the company he/she works for, he/she cannot survive, this creates a dependency relationship that generates emotional tensions, which can lead to inefficiency and underperformance.

Paradoxical as it may seem, the company must ensure that its employees are aware that they do not need it.

#10 - Physical activity

Companies that have spaces where their employees can practice sport have an advantage in increasing productivity and business motivation.

#11 - Social contact

As social animals, human beings are more motivated when we can interact with other people.

This is why shared offices or common work rooms can contribute to good performance, as long as we take care that they do not increase deconcentration.

EThe current coronavirus pandemic, while maintaining safety measures to avoid contagion, such as the mandatory use of masks indoors and keeping safe distances.

#12 - Family

The company must communicate to its employees that it will provide them with enough to take care of their families. In that sense, food, savings and family are directly related.

#13 - Romance

Romantic love should be avoided in the company, as personal relationships between co-workers can lead to emotional friction that can be counterproductive for the company.

#14 - Power

Promotions are a clear example of power as a business motivation. If we offer our employees the possibility of promotion, they will be more motivated.

#15 - Status

Status is directly related to power, so by contributing to the former we will ensure the latter.

#16 - Revenge

Finally, the desire for revenge is, like the desire for romance, one of the desires in business motivation that should be avoided at all costs in the company, as it only brings harm.
