Influencing and motivating are not the same as controlling and managing, and while the former are synonymous with leadership, the latter represent other executive approaches. which certainly do not characterise the qualities sought in a leader.

Leadership is synonymous with influence

Leadership is about influence. Leadership synonymous with control? No, in reality control is practically an illusion. Except for yourself (and not in all situations), you cannot control anyone else. Receiving ad hoc reports on different areas does not give you control.

However, it does it is possible to influence the majority of people. And that is the essence of true leadership.

Do you think Martin Luther King was a leader? The answer is yes, but when you ask yourself whether he had control over anyone, you will probably realise that he did not. He didn't need to, because his ability to communicate, motivate and influence others changed the course of history.

Thus, when looking for a synonym for leadership to help you work out new ways to grow as a leader, you need to think about influence and ways to expand your influence.. No matter what role you occupy in the company's organisational chart, if you are able to:

  • Taking the initiativePerhaps the trait that best differentiates a leader from the rest. Proactivity goes with you and, therefore, you look for opportunities to act to influence the outcome.
  • Concentrate on yourselfChanging your own nature, ironing out flaws and fostering virtues can transform the way others see you. Modelling is the most powerful form of teaching known to man and, in fact, it has been proven that people have difficulty following leaders who say one thing and do another.
  • Sharing your visionMany times, people are waiting to be motivated. They need you as a leader, transmit your energy, commitment and enthusiasm to them (more terms that could be synonymous with leadership). That will spur them to get involved in the cause and do something meaningful.
  • Acknowledging effort: leadership is also synonymous with gratitude. Work well done should be rewarded and not necessarily in a material way.

Motivation, synonymous with leadership

Motivating is one of the activities that differentiates a leader from a mere manager.. Leadership is not about managing tasks; many people can be good at that. Leadership is synonymous with motivation and that means focusing on people and working with emotions..

When in SkillsYouNeed talk about the difference between a manager and a leader, summarising the main points of divergence in a table. We thought it was very illustrative of what both figures represent, and that is why, below, you can find it translated into Spanish:
