Entering the INE website can be to find out for sure about the CNAE. What it is, what process it results from and what is its purpose? are some of the information provided on the website of the National Statistics Institute. and which we review in the following lines.

What is the objective of the CNAE?

The purpose of the CNAE is to serves a statistical purpose. Its mission is to simplify and categorise the different economic activities that can be carried out in our country. In this way, by establishing hierarchies, it is easier to effectively achieve two important goals:

a) To proceed to the classification by homogeneous units, according to the economic activity concerned, of entities and statistical groups.

b) To implement in a more convenient way different statistics that need to be distinguishable according to the type of activity to which they are to be applied.

CNAE: what is it and what does it stand for?

There are few who know what CNAE stands for, which is the National Classification of Economic Activities.. It is an enumeration, a comprehensive list that was updated in 2007 as a result of an international review process.

The requirements of the NACE Rev.2 Approval Regulation have been applied in compiling this list.

This Regulation updates the provisions of the CNAE-93 Rev.1 published a few years earlier and promotes certain topical aspects, such as technology and the environment, also taking into account the progressively more consolidated presence of the service sector.

Thus, in the new CNAE more groups within the services category are visible and it can be seen that some categories lose their statistical relevance, as is the case of fisheries and agriculture, which now appear together, instead of having their own entity as far as codes are concerned.

What else is needed to understand the CNAE?

The National Statistics Institute has foreseen that doubts about the codes could arise and therefore has created Ayudacod, The application works as a search engine and makes it easy to find the corresponding ones for each activity.

For those who want to know more about the correspondence between the standard approving the 2009 CNAE, its complete structure or its correspondence with the CNAE of 2003, the explanatory document which was issued to compile all the codes in a 278-page compendium or the review of the codes in their most important details, You can access all this information via the INE website.

Finally, it only remains to say that, under no circumstances should the meaning of CNAE or what it is be confused with the definition of IAE (Impuesto de Actividades Económicas), a very frequent error but one that needs to be resolved., Fortunately, a code has nothing to do with a tax.
