Tax working days: what are they?

working days hacienda

Tax working days must be known to compute deadlines and avoid delays. Most of the time, Obligations to the tax authorities have a deadline. This deadline will probably be set on one of the working days of the tax office.

However, this does not mean that, from the date on which the notification is received or from the time of awareness of the commitment until the deadline, all of which are to be working days.

Taking this peculiarity into account could give us a much-needed extra margin in some cases.

Working days for the Treasury: which ones are not

As is the case in many other situations, when it comes to identifying Hacienda's working days, it is much easier to list those that are not.

This group of days is known as non-working days and it includes:

  • Every Sunday of the year.
  • Saturdays are too.
  • The public holidays of each locality.
  • Regional holidays.
  • Non-removable national holidays.

Hacienda's non-working days: their origin

The reasons that give rise to public holidays at HM Revenue and Customs can be very varied. There are religious reasons,, such as the festival of Nuestra Señora de la Peña in Fuerteventura, which is celebrated on 20 September; historical reasons, such as December 6th, which is celebrated as Constitution Day throughout Spain. It is a tradition regulated by law, which began in 1983.

The peculiarity of Hacienda's working days nowadays is that, in reality, it is possible to carry out the necessary procedures with the Tax Agency.. This is one of the advantages of the Electronic Headquarters, which facilitates the management of emails, sending of documentation and completion of forms, among others; regardless of the day, time or place from where they are carried out.

However, an important detail must be taken into account. Although the internet “doesn't close” and content can be accessed and even shared; any transaction made outside of Tax Office business days will not be counted as executed on that date, but on the following business day. It is important to know this regulation to avoid incurring a breach, for a few hours or a day, which could lead to sanctions or fines.
